Energy in the Post-2015 Development Framework

Reducing poverty and improving equity
Sep 30, 2015 | International Institute for Environment and Development, Sarah Wykes, Ben Garside, Aaron Leopold

Access to affordable and reliable energy services is crucial to the success of the post-2015 development framework. Shifting to more sustainable and efficient energy systems is also needed to tackle climate change, the most serious obstacle to poverty eradication. To address energy access, models for energy service delivery that serve the needs of the poor must integrate ‘bottom-up’ and context-sensitive approaches, with appropriate finance mechanisms to support them.  In this briefing paper for the International Institute for Environment and Development, Sarah Wykes, Ben Garside and Aaron Leopold argue for a holistic approach to energy in the post-2015 framework that focuses on development with cross-cutting targets and meaningful indicators.
