G-7 Economic Cooperation in the Trump Era

Improving global governance
May 22, 2017 | Peterson Institute for International Economics, Edwin Truman, Jeromin Zettelmeyer

It is expected that the new US administration will remain open to international cooperation in principle, but be influenced by its economic nationalism and the President’s campaign promises to reduce trade imbalances. In this Policy Brief by the Peterson Institute for International Economics, Edwin Truman and Jeromin Zettelmeyer discuss how cooperation in the G-7 can be maintained in the Trump era. They suggest  that useful areas for G-7 macroeconomic, trade, and financial cooperation will exist even after taking US constraints into account, but other G-7 leaders will need to proceed on their own if attempts fail to convince the US administration that economic cooperation is in the interests of all.
