The WTO Reborn?

Improving global governance
May 29, 2017 | Project Syndicate, Arvind Subramanian

The World Trade Organization has been marginalised in recent years by an increasing preference for bilateral and regional deals. In this essay for Project Syndicate, Arvind Subramanian suggests that if the members can reach agreement on opposing protectionism, the WTO’s 146 country membership could become a strength rather than an impediment.  He points to three developments that could prompt the world to reconsider multilateralism and revive the WTO: Emphasis on alternative regional and bilateral trade deals; less emphasis on hyper-globalization; and new stances to prompt China, India, Australia and other mid-sized economies to pursue WTO adjudication.
