The ´Ocean Model of Civilization´, Sustainable History Theory, and Global Cultural Understanding

Sharing core norms and values
Jun 07, 2017 | British Academy, Nayef Al-Rodhan

Global cultural understanding and respect for human dignity is not just a noble goal but a pre-requisite for sustainable pursuit of the national interest. Yet according to Nayef Al-Rodhan of the British Academy, many international relations texts characterize cultures and civilizations as insulated, isolated or monolithic; undervalue historical cultural sharing; and overemphasize the conflictual nature of the international system. He highlights an Ocean Model that views human civilisation as cumulative, acknowledging that all interactions inform a collective culture.
