The Role of Transnational Corporations and Extractive Industries in Seabed Mining, and the Impacts on Oceans Health and Food Security
Deep sea mining is the newest frontier of extractive industry and perhaps the biggest threat to the world’s oceans in the 21st century. In this conference contribution, Maureen Penjueli of the
Pacific Network on Globalization suggests that the lack of an agreed policy on the sustainable management of seabed minerals undermines SDG 14 -
to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources. Failure by the
International Seabed Authority to incorporate statutory provisions to provide sufficient environment protection, implement the norm of “free, prior and informed consent” for indigenous peoples, represents a serious violation of international legal obligations.
