Fake news and conspiracy theories go viral in a matter of hours, creating alternate realities and serving propaganda purposes. This post-truth phenomenon exposes the vulnerability of the liberal democracy, the online community, and international politics, argues Nayef Al-Rodhan in this article for the Global Policy Journal. Among the antidotes he suggests, to blunt this scourge, are fact-checking technologies that securitise fake news and link scientific expertise and policy-making more tightly.
