Gender: An Historical Perspective

Sharing core norms and values
Aug 15, 2017 | IZA - Institute of Labor Economics, Paola Giuliano

Social attitudes toward women vary significantly across societies. This report by Paola Giuliano for the IZA - Institute of Labor Economics highlights historical determinants of contemporary differences in gender roles and gender gaps across societies, and how these are transmitted from parents to children. It outlies the historical origin of differences in female labour-force participation, fertility, education, marriage arrangements, competitive attitudes, domestic violence, and in gender norms. The author discusses the conditions under which gender norms tend to be stable, or change more quickly, and suggests that differences in cultural norms on gender roles emerge from specific historical situations, but tend to persist even after these conditions have changed.
