Land Use Competition in Sub-Saharan Africa’s Rural Areas

Reducing poverty and improving equity
Sep 25, 2017 | Poverty Reduction, Equity and Growth Network, Kiel, Kerstin Nolte, Kacana Sipangule

The increased demand for agricultural land in Sub-Sahara Africa has raised expectations that private investments can lead to growth and poverty reduction - and catalyse a long awaited transformation of the continent’s rural areas. This policy brief by Kerstin Nolte and Kacana Sipangule for the Poverty Reduction, Equity and Growth Network, Kiel, assesses the interest in agricultural land, and suggests that while such transformation may be a necessary step to achieve sustained poverty reduction in the long term, measures must be taken to cushion its adverse effects. It recommends a stronger focus on vulnerable, land-poor smallholder farmers and pastoralists who are most likely to be marginalised by the new land acquisitions.
