The IMF, Gender Equality and Expenditure Policy

Improving global governance
Sep 26, 2017 | Center for Economic and Social Rights, Kate Donald, Nicholas Lusiani

In this briefing, Kate Donald and Nicholas Lusiani of the Center for Economic and Social Rights assess the changing role of the International Monetary Fund in fiscal consolidation  in relation to contractions in public expenditure. They explore the Fund’s positive and negative influence over public expenditure decisions, and explain how public spending cuts impact negatively on women’s rights, impeding progress towards gender equality. They include a case study of Brazil where the IMF has played a significant role in gender-unequal public spending cutbacks, and offer proposals to help the IMF better safeguard women’s rights in fiscal crises.
