Understanding Masculinities: Results from the International Men and Gender Equality Survey – Middle East and North Africa

Sharing core norms and values
Oct 05, 2017 | UN Women, Promundo-US

Women across the MENA region experience gender-based violence particularly from intimate partners, and sexual harassment in the streets. A majority of the men surveyed in Egypt, Lebanon, Morocco, and Palestine identify with inequitable, traditional attitudes. However, this joint report by UN Women and Promundo-US reveals that almost a quarter of the men support some dimensions of women’s equality and empowerment. While men’s inequitable attitudes and practices are still common in the four countries, a growing portion of men and women - from the elite to the most marginalised – see gender equality as possible, and not as a “foreign import”, but rather as emerging from the societies themselves under the right circumstances.
