Disability Prevalence and Trends

Addressing vulnerability and promoting security
Oct 12, 2017 | Governance and Social Development Resource Centre, Stephen Thompson

The WHO and the World Bank estimate that over a billion people (or 15 percent of the global population) have a disability. Prevalence is influenced by factors including trends in health conditions, environmental factors and other variables such as road traffic accidents, natural disasters, conflict, diet, and substance abuse. Disability prevalence is increasing due to an increase in chronic health conditions. In this publication by the Governance and Social Development Resource Centre, Stephen Thompson assesses global trends in the prevalence of different types of disability until 2030.
