Sense of Harmony in Chinese Traditional Culture

Sharing core norms and values
Nov 09, 2017 | Xi’an Jiaotong University in Xi’an, China, YAN Lian-fu

Culture in Latin means cultivate, reside, practice and remodeling of nature. In other Indo-European languages, culture means conquering and reshaping nature, and extends to edifying human nature and moral upbringing. Focusing on Chinese ancient classics, YAN Lian-fu of the Xi’an Jiaotong University in Xi’an, China, argues that Chinese traditional culture is directed towards the realisation and discovery of the body and encompasses dialogue and harmonies. It is thus entirely different from western culture, as it attempts to accompany interactive culture with the human being, to deal with nature in a harmonious way by adapting to the natural environment, and making the environment be of benefit to himself.
