Politically motivated violence and large scale environmental damage pose a threat in all countries, and may exceed the capacity of any state to protect its own citizens. Among the proposed models of global governance, some have sought to join all of humankind under one rule, and some have been modest reform proposals intended to improve the existing system. This paper by the Global Challenges Foundation presents a sample of these ideas; concludes that the current international system has proved unable to cope adequately with the most pressing global issues; and calls for institutions to take and implement collective decisions, in the interests of all.
