Why We Must Talk About Population

Addressing vulnerability and promoting security
Dec 14, 2017 | Millennium Alliance for Humanity and Biosphere, Erik Assadourian

In his provocative response to David Roberts’ article on Self-Censorship on Overpopulation, Erik Assadourian warns of the urgency of stabilising the global population. Writing for the Millennium Alliance for Humanity and Biosphere, he suggests that instead of accepting a stabilisation of population growth at 9.5 or 10 billion, a long-term plan is needed to get population back to a manageable range. Some scientists have suggested the ideal population range to be around 1-3 billion, depending on how badly damaged the Earth’s systems have become, and that a Framework Convention on Population Growth should be considered, to accompany the Framework Convention on Climate Change so that all countries can assume ownership.
