African traditional teaching methods have been built on the community, often involving dance and song, oral storytelling and cultural or spiritual rituals. Modern primary education seeks to provide students with the foundational skills needed for advanced education and economic participation. This report by the Atlantic Council reviews primary education on the continent; details its evolution in the post-independence period; discusses challenges impeding better learning by African primary students; and offers recommendations.
