Democracy in Peril: Ten Elections to Watch in 2018

Addressing vulnerability and promoting security
Feb 03, 2018 | Denver Dialogues, Timothy Sisk

In 2017, many countries experienced threats to civil and political liberties, popular participation, and fundamental human rights.  In the Denver Dialogues, Timothy Sisk suggests that democracy is not in decline as historically its growth is associated with deep drivers within society such as rising levels of education, income, and urbanization which lead to “demands” for democracy. He suggests that 2018 could be dubbed “The Year of Elections”  and identifies ten countries whose elections deserve close attention as each is, in its own way, a test of democracy’s resilience in an era of change, challenge, and crisis.
