A New Profile of the Global Poor

Reducing poverty and improving equity
Feb 24, 2018 | Elsevier, Andrés Castañeda, Dung Doan, David Newhouse et al

770 million persons remained in extreme poverty in 2013, a figure equaling the combined population of the European Union and the United States. About 80 percent of the extremely poor and 76 percent of the moderately poor live in rural areas. In this paper for Elsevier, Andrés Castañeda, Dung Doan, David Newhouse et al present a demographic profile of the extreme and moderate poor by age, gender, household composition, educational attainment, urban/rural residence, and employment in the agricultural sector. They analyse the demographic profiles of the poor against those of the non-poor, and emphasise the central importance of policies and programs that benefit households in rural areas, and those with large numbers of children, in reducing extreme poverty.
