Over the past decade, multilateral environmental governance has yielded modest results and multilateral negotiations have been slow and polarized. As a result, the number of new environmental agreements is declining and membership of existing agreements has plateaued. This policy brief by the
Center for International Governance Innovation shows how trade deals contributed to the effectiveness of multilateral environmental agreements (MEA). It suggests that despite fewer new multilateral agreements, existing MEAs have contributed to environmental protection and remain central to environmental governance.
