How do we restore Trust in our Democracies? Museums can be a Starting Point

Sharing core norms and values
Mar 24, 2018 | World Economic Forum’s Arts and Culture Agenda, David Skorton, Smithsonian Institution

Many countries are experiencing a breakdown in trust in public institutions. In this paper for the World Economic Forum’s Arts and Culture Agenda, David Skorton of the Smithsonian Institution explores ways to repair this trust. He suggests that cultural institutions and museums create virtual and physical spaces for people of different backgrounds to engage outside their political, social, ethnic and cultural circles, even about contentious or taboo topics. Because many are seen as even-handed providers of information, museums can contribute to building modern multi-ethnic communities.
