Apr 27, 2018 | Global Policy Journal, Gervase Phillips

In this article for the Global Policy Journal, Gervase Phillips provides the historical background to the current rise of antisemitism in several countries. He suggests that the seemingly endless conflicts in the Middle East, the rise of right-wing populism, and the influence of Islamic fundamentalism, have spawned divisive domestic politics in the West. The marked escalation of anti-Semitic incidents in 2017 demonstrates the potential to turn hatred of symbolic Jews into the persecution of actual Jews.  There is now the unsettling prospect that this trend is becoming “normalised”.
