Transformative Approaches to Violent Extremism

Addressing vulnerability and promoting security
Posted May 15, 2018 | Berghof Foundation, Beatrix Austin, Hans Giessmann

Violent extremism is associated with radical ideologies or groups which strive for a complete, not incremental, change of political and social relations. In this report for the Berghof Foundation, Beatrix Austin and Hans Giessmann suggest that if radicalisation is rooted in social hardships and political grievances, education must enable affected people to mitigate tensions and engage constructively to foster social change. Inclusivity must be wide enough to enable effective strategies to counter violent extremism across religious and secular actors. Dialogue must not be limited to religious communities.
