The State of Plastics

Addressing vulnerability and promoting security
Jul 05, 2018 | UNEP

Although ninety per cent of bottled water and eighty-three per cent of tap water now contain plastic particles, little is known about the impacts of microplastics on human health. About 13 million tonnes of plastic leak into our oceans every year, harming biodiversity, economies and, potentially, human health. This paper by the UNEP focuses on the burgeoning use of unnecessary plastics – the single-use items that make up a large amount of waste. It reviews the crisis, explores the potential of alternative materials, sheds light on the effectiveness of legislation to cut down on single-use plastics, and outlines paths to a world free of plastic pollution.
