The Future of Work: Robots Cooking Free Lunches?

Delivering sustainable economic growth
Jul 22, 2018 | Wilfried Martens Centre for European Studies, Žiga Turk

The rapid technological progress in automation, robotisation and artificial intelligence is raising both fears and hopes that the nature of work will change significantly. Žiga Turk suggests in this report by the Wilfried Martens Centre for European Studies that the nature of work will change because of the impact of globalisation and the exponential progress in computerisation, robotisation and artificial intelligence. Yet the future of work cannot be predefined as humans will have choices on two levels. The first concerns how they frame the problem politically; the second, how they address it technocratically with policies. The author argues for the latter and illustrates possibilities in four scenarios.
