Global Geopolitics in Transition
It is not just the international order that has come under stress, but more specifically the liberal international order with its professed commitment to democratic institutions, respect for human rights and to free trade and capital movement. In his lecture to the annual meeting of the
Foreign and Commonwealth Office Association, Gareth Evans addresses recent big power shifts and the retreat from multilateralism. As examples he names the rise of China and India relative to the declining presence of the United States. Provided a programme of structural reform continues, India will surpass the US economy in size, by mid-century if not by 2030 in purchasing power terms, and to become, after China, the world’s second largest economy.
