Handbook on the Least Developed Country Category: Inclusion, Graduation and Special Support Measures
The 47 countries ranked as LDCs comprise approximately 13 per cent of the world’s population, but account for less than 1.3 per cent of global GDP and approximately 0.9 per cent of world trade. Their average
real GDP per capita in 2018 was estimated at 16.7 per cent of that of other developing countries and 1.7 per cent of that of developed countries. In this Handbook, the
UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs outlines refinements to the LDC criteria and progress made by several countries. It provides an overview of the support measures to which LDCs are entitled, including the possibility of exporting goods to most developed countries and many developing countries on a duty-free, quota-free basis; exclusive access to a few multilateral support mechanisms; and participation in international forums.
