Emerging Technologies and Geopolitical Contestation

Delivering sustainable economic growth
May 14, 2019 | Observer Research Foundation, Harsh Pant, Aarshi Tirkey

Information and communications technology has played an important role in geopolitics. The rollout of the 5G network, the next generation of global communications, has turned into a geopolitical confrontation between China and sone western countries, led by the US. Harsh Pant and Aarshi Tirkey suggest in their article for the Observer Research Foundation that the security risks surrounding Huawei’s 5G network are not entirely unfounded, given the close collaboration between the Beijing government and the industry, which may support industrial espionage. Such concerns could bring about two politically and geographically divided 5G networks which may not be inter-operable, leading to lower economies of scale and higher transaction costs.
