The Global Assessment Report on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES)

Addressing vulnerability and promoting security
Jun 05, 2019 | IPBES

Biodiversity loss has many causes, including pollution and urbanisation which today accounts for a land area of three percent of the globe, but is expected to triple by 2030. This IPBES summary of its report provides evidence of accelerated species extinction over the coming decades of somewhere between 500,000 and one million species. It suggests to policymakers that part of the solution lies with indigenous peoples and local communities whose numerical significance assures them a major role in biodiversity preservation. Achieving a sustainable economy involves making fundamental reforms to economic and financial systems and tackle poverty and inequality, integral to sustainability.
