Integrating Goal 16 and Human Rights with SDGs Vital to the 2030 Agenda

Sharing core norms and values

The term “human rights” is not mentioned in any of the SDGs with the exception of target 7 of Goal 4 which calls for education systems to include global citizenship and human rights. Ilgü Özler and Masooma Rahmaty suggest in this article for the Global Observatory that incorporating a human rights-based approach to the SDGs would accelerate the reform of the UN development system. The delivery of education that includes a core curriculum of human rights and global citizenship requires state institutions with the capacity to develop this curriculum and to run inclusive schools that treat children as equals. This calls for transparent and responsive state institutions - with goal 16 and human rights coming into play for education-related social goals.
