What China’s Defence Paper tells us about Beijing’s Regional Ambitions

Addressing vulnerability and promoting security
Aug 19, 2019 | Lowy Institute, Pooja Bhat

The content of China’s 2019 defence white paper paints a picture of China’s domestic and regional security vision as well as its threat perceptions, security objectives, missions, and structural and technological development in its PLA forces. Pooja Bhat argues in this article for the Lowy Institute that the Chinese military strategy serves to reshape the regional security framework. The indication that the East China Sea, South China Sea and the Yellow Sea constitute “important waters, islands, and reefs in the region,”  and the statement that Asia-Pacific countries are “increasingly aware that they are members of a community with shared destiny” are seen by other states in the region as ‘problematic’.
