How Can AI Systems Understand Human Values?

Sharing core norms and values
Sep 22, 2019 | Future of Life Institute, Jolene Creighton

There are benefits to AI systems that automatically learn better ways of representing data and develop models that correspond to humans' values. This requires researchers to model human values accurately for AI systems. In this article of the Future of Life Institute, Jolene Creighton suggests that  a complex analysis of competing values is needed. With reference to the views of Kaj Sotala of the Foundation Research Institute, she notes that for machine learning systems to be successful, they must understand human values on their own, weigh competing human desires and demands, understand what outcomes are most valued, and act accordingly.
