Do Arabs want Democracy?
In 2018,
Zogby Research Services surveyed 8,628 adults across Tunisia, Egypt, Lebanon, Palestine, Jordan, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Turkey, and Iran, asking them to rank their top three priorities on a list of ten. The first observation Richard LeBaron and Leah Hickert of the
Atlantic Council draw from the data is that Arabs have not rejected democracy as a form of government suitable for them. Second, MENA countries need to address the unfulfilled economic aspirations of their people. In eight of the ten countries surveyed, participants judged “expanding employment opportunities” as the most important issue, while “improving the educational system” and “political and governmental reform” drew support. That the Arabs surveyed, expect more from their governments in political and government reform, is apparent from the abiding interest in democracy as the best political system.
