The Corona Crisis and International Relations: Open Questions, Tentative Assumptions
In this article for the
German Institute for International and Security Affairs, Volker Perthes suggests that the geopolitical impact of the corona virus on the international order, inter-state rivalries, conflict and cooperation will not produce a uniform overall picture. The shape of the world after the
Covid-19 pandemic will depend on political will, leadership, and the ability of international actors to cooperate. Whereas in certain areas a new “globality” could emerge, the ideological dispute between China and Western states is likely to sharpen. Different systems of government and different concepts of the relationship between state and society predispose towards sectoral de-globalization. As neither Washington nor Beijing will focus strongly on finding common solutions to global problems, the EU and like-minded multilateralists such as Canada, South Korea, Indonesia and Mexico must take the initiative.
