Three Scenarios for Globalisation in a Post-Covid World

Improving global governance
Apr 04, 2020 | Clingendael Spectator, Frederik van Til

Populism, protectionism and climate change have all challenged economic globalisation. This raises the question of the extent of the impact of COVID-19 on participation in inter-regional and intra-regional value chains and on economic globalisation.  In this article for Clingendael Spectator, Frederik van Til sets out three scenarios for the potential long-term impact of the pandemic: Localisation; Regionalisation; and a Continuation of globalisation. He argues that  it is not important which scenario will play out, but whether global supply chains survive the resultant tensions.
