COVID-19: Inequalities are widening everywhere

Addressing vulnerability and promoting security
Jul 01, 2020 | Agence Française de Développement

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected a workforce of around 1.6 billion people, most of whom work in the informal economy of emerging and developing countries. In their article for the Agence Française de Développement, Anda David, Hélène Djoufelkit and Salomé Mançon discuss current and impending inequalities. They suggest that it is difficult to assess if there is a paradigm shift in the fight against inequality, and whether that shift might enhance cooperation or cause even greater polarization. The authors argue that it is likely that there will be a contraction of globalisation and a return to national scales. The COVID-19 crisis, moreover, underscores the crucial role of the social state.
