An Inclusive Approach to Tackling Global Challenges

Improving global governance
Jul 04, 2020 | G20 Insights, Maha Akeel

Several international organizations - among them the UN, IMF, World Bank, WTO and WHO - have taken initiatives to address global challenges, but have often failed due to disagreements about the agenda and scope of reforms. In this policy brief  for G20 Insights, Maha Akeel address these challenges and suggests ways for the G20 to engage and coordinate more effectively with relevant international and regional organizations and local stakeholders. He proposes that the G20 forms a steering committee composed of representatives of international organizations, including financial institutions, G20 member states, NGOs, and think tanks to tackle challenges of poverty, climate change, or disease, to reform international organizations, and to set goals and monitoring mechanisms, focusing on accountability and transparency.
