Giving Up on God - The Global Decline of Religion

Sharing core norms and values
Aug 23, 2020 | Foreign Affairs, Ronald Inglehart

Growing numbers of people no longer find religion necessary. This decline in belief is not confined to high-income countries but is apparent across most of the world. In this article for Foreign Affairs, Ronald Inglehart ascribes this in part to modern societies no longer needing to uphold the gender and sexual norms that the world religions have instilled. As traditional religiosity declines, a strong set of moral norms is emerging to fill the void. In highly secure and secular countries, people increasingly give priority to self-expression and free choice, with a growing emphasis on human rights, tolerance of outsiders, environmental protection, gender equality, and freedom of speech.
