Investing in a Green Recovery - The Pandemic is only a Prelude to a Looming Climate Crisis

Addressing vulnerability and promoting security
Sep 07, 2020 | IMF, Finance & Development, Ulrich Volz

In countries rich and poor, the COVID-19 crisis has exposed the vulnerabilities of health and social systems and economic fragilities. In this article for Finance & Development, Ulrich Volz emphasises the need to prepare for future pandemics and for climate change. He warns that the earth will soon pass climate tipping points, presenting a threat of abrupt and irreversible climate change. The COVID-19 pandemic has struck at a time when - according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change – we have about a decade left to achieve a low-carbon transition and bring the world economy to a trajectory limiting global warming to 1.5°C above preindustrial levels. It is thus imperative that the crisis responses result in a policy transformation.
