Global catastrophic risks are a category of disaster that poses an existential threat to humanity. Some, whether manmade or natural, are obvious, like nuclear war, while others may seem remote, like an asteroid impact. This report by the Global Challenges Foundation identifies eight global catastrophic risks and discusses current capacities of to address them. They are: Nuclear warfare, biological and chemical warfare, catastrophic climate change, ecological collapse, pandemics, asteroid impact, super-volcanic eruptions, and the misuse of Artificial Intelligence. These risks are have the potential to decimate human life, but can be mitigated through stronger international cooperation and better global governance.
