Global Health Security: COVID-19 and Its Impacts – Urgently Needed: Ecological View in Decision-making

Addressing vulnerability and promoting security
Sep 19, 2020 | S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies, Margareth Sembiring

As humanity and the environment are interconnected, an ecological perspective is urgently needed to complement the human security approach to environment and climate issues. The COVID-19 pandemic response has highlighted the tension between prioritising human needs and taking care of the environment. Margareth Sembiring of the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies warns that, globally, only nine per cent of the plastics produced has been recycled. The complex environmental challenges and the race against time to meet the 1.5°C emissions target, demand a shift from an exclusive focus on human security to an ecological perspective. This calls for awareness that humanity and the environment share the same Earth System.
