Towards more Policy Advice: Maximising the UN’s Assets to Build Back Better

Improving global governance
Nov 27, 2020 | German Development Institute, John Hendra, Max-Otto Baumann

Policy advice typically requires long timeframes, is applied in complex political environments and does not reward development actors with the tangible and visible results that downstream interventions yield. In their briefing paper for the German Development Institute, Hendra, John and Max Baumann conclude that the UN can play a more relevant and effective role through policy advice, to advance sustainable development and help all country types build back better. They suggest its global mandates allows the UN to initiate policy discussions; mobilise expertise from its extensive networks; and act as a trusted and impartial convener for all national stakeholders. What it lacks is the political will of member states to use these assets, also by providing the right kind of funding.
