Liberalism - Decline or Survival

Sharing core norms and values
Nov 30, 2020 | Quilette, Sam Ashworth-Hayes

Liberalism, as the dominant social form in Western societies, faces challenges in the face of below-replacement fertility. The short-term fix for a declining population has been to turn towards immigration. Sam Ashworth-Hayes suggests in this article for Quilette that those raised by parents from other cultures may not always espouse liberal values. He argues that for a liberal culture to survive, it must assimilate large numbers of arrivals, both by rendering the native population amenable to this, and in ensuring that newcomers adopt and transmit liberal values. A culture which combines high migration with low integration and fertility will be replaced in the end, whether by a more conservative culture, or something entirely different.
