Dec 06, 2020 | Africaportal, Martin Nguru

Diplomacy has experienced dramatic changes throughout the centuries. In this article for Africaportal, Martin Nguru describes the evolution of diplomacy through two periods: diplomacy in antiquity and the age of absolutism, and diplomacy in the age of democracy. The 1980s saw the advent of a new age with rapid expansion of information technology,  the spread of the internet and social media- including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Whatsapp, Zoom, and Tiktok. This has caused concern among diplomats that their traditional conduct in diplomatic practice is being eroded by the digitalization of their profession.
