Addressing vulnerability and promoting security
Jan 09, 2021 | MERICS, Helena Legarda, Meia Nouwens

China’s growing influence and international policies present both opportunities and challenges that NATO members need to address together. NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg has noted: “This is not about moving NATO into the South China Sea, but it is about taking into account that China is coming closer to us.” In their report for MERICS, Helena Legarda and Meia Nouwens explore challenges that China poses for the alliance and propose some courses of action that NATO may follow to address them. They conclude that the allies have agreed that facing their ‘China challenge’ through NATO is imperative but have not yet reached a consensus on how to do so.
