Strategic Alert: Towards a Space Security Strategy

Addressing vulnerability and promoting security
Jun 09, 2021 | Hague Centre for Strategic Studies, Hugo van Manen, Tim Sweijs, Patrick Bolder et al

In this Strategic Alert by the Hague Centre for Strategic Studies, Hugo van Manen, Tim Sweijs, Patrick Bolder et al warn of the growing dependence of the Netherlands on space-based infrastructure.  The number of spacecraft launched, has more than tripled since 2008, with private sector actors accounting for the bulk of this growth. This new significant phase of the Space Age brings with it many threats and opportunities. The extra-terrestrial realm contains vast quantities of raw materials offering enormous potential economic gains and raises the risk of geopolitical competition. This has led major powers to begin militarizing and weaponizing space in support of their terrestrial warfighting capabilities, while moving towards establishing extra-terrestrial footholds
