Dignity in International Service: In Memoriam Dag Hammarskjöld

Sharing core norms and values
Posted Jul 13, 2021 | Global Policy , Simon Hollis

The protracted utilitarian interests of leaders weaken their ability to manage today’s turbulent risk environment effectively. This Global Policy essay by Simon Hollis honours Dag Hammarskjöld’s legacy with a proposal to renew his personalist ethics as a corrective in today’s turbulent political environment. Motivated by his speeches and writings, the author suggests that Hammarskjöld’s idea of international service be revitalized by broadening traditional education initiatives to consider the centrality of personal dignity in sound global governance. The author recommends that education initiatives be broadened to include educure, in addition to educare, to provide a learning platform to enable leading with dignity.
