A Future for All: The Need for Human-Wildlife Coexistence

Addressing vulnerability and promoting security
Jul 22, 2021 | UN Environment Programme, UNDP, Eva Gross, Nilanga Jayasinghe, Gert Polet, 155 experts

This joint report between the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the UNDP reveals that conflict-related killing affects more than 75 percent of the world’s wild cats and many other terrestrial and marine carnivore species. Eva Gross, Nilanga Jayasinghe, Gert Polet and 155 experts from 27 countries explain the complexity of human-wildlife conflict (HWC) and its drivers; illustrate its impacts at various levels; highlight ways to address them by unlocking solutions and moving towards coexistence; and provide an outlook on coexistence between people and wildlife.  Case studies illustrate impacts and show how human societies around the world have been able to build partnerships with nature in their own ways. Yet despite being so strongly linked to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), HWC tends to be overlooked by policymakers.
