How Young People can prevent Democratic Backsliding

Sharing core norms and values
Jul 22, 2021 | Chatham House,

It is often suggested that young people’s faith in democratic politics is lower than that of any other age group. In this report, Chatham House discusses survey results arising from its Common Futures Conversations (CFC) community indicating that more than 70 percent of young people are highly engaged in politics and participate in key democratic activities like discussing politics, voting, protesting, and writing to the media. Many young activists and students have created new and interactive ways of engaging the population - especially younger citizens - in politics through social media. A particular strength of this approach is the presentation of important themes in accessible, interactive, and appealing ways to bridge the gap between intellectual information and a supposedly disengaged audience.  Approaches to democratic improvement should draw on the undervalued potential of young people’s democratic spirit.
