Towards an African Feminist Institutionalism for Women’s Political Representation
The importance of feminist leadership is emphasised by the choice of
Women in Public Life – Equal Participation in Decision-Making as the framework for the
UN Commission on the Status of Women 2021. Meanwhile, many African countries without quotas for women in public life are still seeking reforms to promote women’s political empowerment. In her policy note for the
Nordic Africa Institute Diana Højlund Madsen suggests that isolated gender equality reforms have delivered mixed results. She argues that these need to be combined with the
regendering of institutions working against more women in politics and suggests steps towards an
African feminist institutionalism for women in politics.
