Girls’ Education at Scale

Sharing core norms and values
Oct 21, 2021 | Center for Global Development, David Evans, Amina Mendez Acosta, Fei Yuan

Many educational interventions boost outcomes for girls in settings where they face educational disadvantages. This review by the Center for Global Development focuses on large-scale programs and policies that reach at least 10 000 students, and on school outcomes like student learning and completion, rather than intermediate outcomes such as enrollment and attendance. Interventions like providing better sanitation facilities and safe spaces for girls show promising results but are either supported by limited evidence across settings or focus on intermediate outcomes. David Evans, Amina Mendez Acosta, and Fei Yuan discuss three core considerations to enable incorporation of evidence-based solutions into local education policies: constraints to girls’ education, potential solutions, and programme costs – and explore lessons to enable scaling programs effectively.
