Ecological Civilization: From Emergency to Emergence

Addressing vulnerability and promoting security
Nov 29, 2021 | Club of Rome, David Kurten

The evolution of life is a continuing process in which Earth appears to have a special place. Given the speed at which environmental and social collapse are occurring, only a decade may remain to achieve the necessary redirection of the course of humanity as a globally interdependent species, David Kurten warns in a Personal White Paper for the Club of Rome. He argues that as humans contemplate the seriousness of the crisis and the opportunity within their reach, they must recognize that human viability depends on emergency action to stop the damage humanity is causing, facilitate Earth’s healing, and advance the emergence of an ecological civilization. Successful navigation of this essential transition requires the an ecological economics to guide the fulfillment of the essential needs of the species, while simultaneously meeting the distinctive responsibilities of humans within Earth’s community of life.
